Cologne Old Town: Walking Tour, Night Watchman, Executioner Tour or Comedy Bus?
5 min read
If you want a guided walk in English, the Old Town Highlights tour is the one to book: of the six tours below, it is the only one that lists English. The other five are led in German, so the real choice for German speakers is between a general walk, a theme (night watchman, executioners) and a show on a bus.

The general walks
The Old Town Highlights tour costs €29 and is rated 4.6 from 1,579 reviews. The page describes the cathedral, a Roman villa with a preserved mosaic floor, the Roman-Germanic Museum area, the Hohenzollern Bridge, the largest Romanesque church in the city, the oldest marketplaces and the Old Town Hall, ending back at the cathedral fountain. The same page marks the tour as wheelchair accessible and lists people with mobility impairments as not suitable, so if you use a wheelchair, ask the operator before you book.
The Guided Highlights tour is run by KölnTourismus, costs €14.50 and is rated 4.5 from 1,332 reviews. It goes from the cathedral past the Dionysos mosaic and Museum Ludwig to the Rhine, then through the old merchants’ quarter around St. Martin’s church to Alter Markt and the City Hall. The page asks you to arrive 10 minutes early and to bring your booking confirmation or an ID card.
The Cathedral and Old Town tour with a Kölsch costs €20.70. According to the page, it looks at the cathedral from outside only. Besides the cathedral and the Roman sights it visits a brewery, where the page says you get a Kölsch or a soft drink, and it covers carnival customs. For a full comparison of the Brauhaus-focused options, see our Kölsch brewery tour guide.
The themed tours
The night watchman tour costs €15.50 and is rated 4.6 from 1,896 reviews. A guide in historical costume explains the watchman’s duties and medieval life; the page says it also takes place in rain or snow and that children under 16 are not suitable. Start times are on the booking page.
The executioner tour costs €15.90. It is about medieval law, punishment and the people pushed to the edge of society, including how the city dealt with lepers. The page restricts it to guests aged 18 and over, so it is not a tour for a family with children.
The comedy bus
The comedy bus costs €33.61 and is rated 4.3 from 1,456 reviews. It is a stand-up show on a moving bus that passes the main sights; the page says it is available only in German and runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Think of it as a comedy show rather than a way of learning the Old Town. If you want nightlife options in general, our nightlife guide covers them.
What we would book
- English speakers: the Old Town Highlights tour. The walking tours page linked below lists more tours, including one with “English-Guided” in its title.
- German speakers on a first visit: the Guided Highlights tour, because it is shorter and ends at Alter Markt.
- A second walk with a theme: the night watchman tour, or the executioner tour if everyone is 18 or over.
- Only if you follow German comedy: the bus.
Before or after the walk, the cathedral ticket guide covers the tower climb and the treasury, which you can buy separately or as a combined ticket. More options are on the walking tours page and the night watchman and history tours page.
