Rhine Cruise in Cologne: 1 Hour, 90 Minutes, Evening or Harbour Tour?

5 min read

Two people laughing at the railing of a Rhine boat with an orange drink, the Rheinauhafen crane houses on the bank behind them

For most first visits, one of the two daytime sightseeing cruises is the right choice, and the only real question is one hour or ninety minutes. The five boat trips below all start in the centre, near the cathedral, but they are run by two different companies, leave from different points and differ in language and accessibility.

The five trips side by side

Trip Length Operator Meeting point Commentary
1-hour sightseeing cruise 1 hour KD Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt KD ticket office, Trankgasse Loudspeaker, German and English
Skyline cruise 90 minutes Kölntourist Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer Recorded, English and German, on four departures
1-hour Kölntourist cruise 1 hour Kölntourist Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer Recorded, English and German, on four departures
Evening cruise 2 hours KD Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt KD ticket office, Trankgasse Live lounge music
Harbour tour 3 hours Kölntourist Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer Live guide, German only

What you see

The one-hour KD cruise passes the Old Town, the Hohenzollern, Deutz and South bridges, the Rheinauhafen district and the Chocolate Museum, with the cathedral in view. It costs €20, is rated 4.2 out of 5 from 6,428 reviews and sells food and drinks on board. Children up to 6 travel free according to the booking page.

The skyline cruise goes further. The page says you cruise under five bridges as far as Rodenkirchen in the south, past the crane houses of Rheinauhafen, then back north beyond the cathedral. It costs €24, has 3,737 reviews and a rating of 4.4. Commentary is recorded, and the page ties it to the 10:45, 12:45, 14:45 and 16:45 departures, so check which sailing you are booking.

The one-hour Kölntourist trip also goes south under five bridges to Rodenkirchen, while the northern leg to the Zoobrücke is described on the skyline cruise page. It costs €15.20 and carries up to 30 people. The page says you cannot get off at Rheinauhafen or Rodenkirchen. Its commentary departures are listed at 11:45, 13:15, 14:45 and 16:30.

Evening and harbour

The evening cruise lasts two hours and costs €29. The description promises sunset views of the Romanesque churches and the cathedral lit in green, a bar with cocktails, beer and snacks, and live lounge music. It is a lounge-music cruise, not a party boat. Picnics are not allowed, and the page lists a group size of up to 100.

The harbour tour is for people who want to see how a working port functions. It visits the Rheinau, Deutz and Mülheim harbours and the Niehl container harbour, with a live guide in German only. It costs €35.50, and the page asks you to arrive 15 minutes before departure.

When they sail

Most of these boats are seasonal, so the operators’ timetables matter as much as the booking pages. KD lists its one-hour panorama cruise from 28 March to 31 October 2026 with up to six departures a day, and in Advent (20 November to 20 December 2026) only Friday to Sunday at 12:00 and 13:30. Kölntourist sails its one-hour trip from March to October on set weekdays and in November and December only when a ship is available. KD’s lounge evening cruise is listed for June to mid-September, Thursday to Saturday, 20:00 to 22:00. The harbour tour runs on Wednesdays and Sundays from 4 April to 31 October 2027 (Sundays only in April), from 13:45 to about 16:45. Outside summer, open the booking calendar before you settle on a trip.

Accessibility: read both lines

The one-hour KD cruise is tagged “wheelchair accessible” but also lists wheelchair users under “not suitable for”, and notes that the water level can affect access. The evening cruise page lists wheelchair users under “not suitable for” too. The Kölntourist boats say plainly that the ships are not wheelchair accessible, and the toilets and open deck are reached by stairs. Electric wheelchairs are not allowed on them. Because the pages disagree, ask the operator before you book if this matters to you.

Our pick

If you have an hour, take the one-hour KD cruise. If you want both the southern stretch to Rodenkirchen and the northern one to the Zoobrücke, take the skyline cruise. Book the evening cruise for a drink and music at sunset in summer, and the harbour tour (April to October) only if you follow German. At Christmas there are special sailings; see our Christmas markets guide. All options are on the Rhine cruises page.
